5 Signs Your Child Needs an Eye Test

Uncorrected vision problems are one of the leading causes of poor school performance in children. Because children assume their vision is normal, they rarely complain. As a parent or teacher, you need to watch for the signs.
1. Sitting Very Close to the TV or Screen
If your child moves closer to screens or holds books very close to their face, it is a classic sign of myopia (short-sightedness).
2. Squinting Frequently
Squinting temporarily improves focus. If your child squints often, they are compensating for reduced visual acuity.
3. Frequent Headaches
Eye strain from uncorrected refractive error causes headaches — especially after reading or screen time.
4. One Eye Turning In or Out
This could be strabismus (squint). Early treatment with glasses or patching therapy can prevent permanent vision loss in the weaker eye.
5. Avoiding Reading or Close Work
A child who resists reading may not dislike books — they may simply find it uncomfortable due to a vision problem.
